Experience and Qualifications

A British native, Ron arrived in Thailand in 1987 after spending long periods working in Africa, South and North America, and Europe. He has a B.Sc in Sociology and a P.G.C.E. in TESOL from London University, as well as an M.A. in English (Emphasis: Creative Writing) from San Francisco State University. From 1975 to 1998, Ron worked mostly as an English teacher, during which time he developed his photography skills and learned much about global cultures.

From 1998 onwards, he has worked exclusively as a freelance writer and photographer. Recent Work

Since 2000, Ron has worked mostly on assignments for guide book companies. His first book was Walks along the Thames Path (New Holland, UK, 2001), now in its third edition, for which he provided both text and photography. The book describes 25 short, circular walks that include the most attractive and interesting stretches of England's most famous river. In 2003, he headed for the Caribbean, where he researched and wrote a new Spiral Guide to the Dominican Republic for the AA and AAA. He has visited Vietnam several times as co-author of the Rough Guide to Vietnam, and has contributed significant sections to the Rough Guide to Thailand, the Rough Guide to Cambodia and the Rough Guide to Southeast Asia.

In 2006-7, most of his work was for Dorling Kindersley (DK) guide books. First, he visited Malaysian Borneo to research and write the chapters on Sabah and Sarawak for the new Eyewitness Travel Guide to Malaysia & Singapore (DK, 2008), then he was sole author of Top Ten Bangkok (DK, 2008) before contributing to the re-launch of the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Thailand (DK, 2008). In 2008, five titles by Ron hit the bookshelves. These included the three DK titles mentioned above as well as Portrait of Thailand, a pictorial record of Thai culture and geographic regions, which he both wrote and photographed, and the third edition of the popular Walks along the Thames Path. He also added the names of National Geographic and Frommer’s to his impressive list of clients, updating National Geographic Vietnam for the second edition, and updating the Thailand chapter for Frommer’s Southeast Asia (6th edition). In 2009, among other projects, Ron updated Frommer’s Thailand (9th edition).
